You see, I'd kind of assumed, given I also work alone and spend most of the day on my own as well, that this is how IM would work for me. Given it's not worked like that for me, it's been easier to disable it rather than address the inevitable conclusion ... I'm clearly crap at light conversation in a wide range of media.
I have been told several times in the last year that unless you have met me I can come across in print/pixels as being a bit ... 'stern'? Possibly this is also code for humorless as well, not sure, but I have several online friends who were apparently a bit surprised by the in-the-flesh version of brisingamen the first time we met.
(Ironically, I am actually quite shy in company so theoretically, print/pixels ought to work so much better.)
See, I'm also highly distractable at work, which is why I avoid such things. I can end up spending hours doing 400 directions of research for a project that I could have finished in that time. Does it help or hinder your productivity?
