I'm wondering if you couldn't get to it from the bottom side easier, the way you roll a new set of bearings in? Can you reach the lifters from there?
p.s. I know next to nothing firsthand on working on cars, but I listen to my husband gabble about them ALL THE TIME, and I recall him talking about his mom (really!) rolling a new set of bearings into his dad's dirt track race car, and he talked like it was fairly easy, and she did it from underneath. So, maybe?
