It is using IP information from hits to the image you linked on their server and then mapping those IPs to a location. If it finds a location, it puts a star on the map. There are open source libraries and api's out there to do a geolocation based on IP.

I thought there'd at least be outlines; you know, like a photograph from space. If only some folks in Asia, Africa, and South America looked at it, you could see more outlines. *sigh*
