I hear Captain Picard (er, what's-his-name) in an interview on the BBS last night. He said he wished Next Gen was still in production so he could pound on the writers' door and have them do an episode about the Prime Directive paralleling W's anti-Prime-Directive-ness.
Remember how, every time the Federation decided to intervene, it ended badly? Now imagine an episode where the Enterprise goes to some alien world, manufactures unlikely charges against its people, blows the living shit out of it for a while, risks nearly losing its ground troops as the logistics crumbles (say, when the Admiral discovers what's going on and ceases all weapons shipments), installs a Federation-friendly leadership (except it would have to be an Enterprise-friendly gov't, cuz the Federation wouldn't stand for this), and then makes billions siphoning from its economy.
Oh, wait, the Federation doesn't use money, is against intervention (what do they say? something about rule number one...), and would immediately take Picard into custody.
Sigh.

Yeah...whatever happened to my Star Trek utopia? And they wonder why people get so into the mythos. What is truly infuriating is that clearly the enlightenment exists to be able to envision that world, but all the wrong s.o.b.s are in charge of the globe, have no interest whatsoever with truly humanistic value system. I also love the fact that the ethical system upon which the Federation operates is completely ahteistic in nature--no as in "anti-religion", but simply "without religion". That's always been one of my gripes with religious folks, particularly Xtians, who seem to have this idea that without religion, ethics and morality are impossible (ignoring huge swaths of history and other cultures who never based their codes on deities).
Double-plus-fun irony in the fact that the cheddarheads who are running this show all claim to be good, God-fearin' xtians. I suppose I just need to add some more adjectives in there, like, "good, God-fearin', rapine, greedy, murderous, fanatical xtians" and I can accept the phrase.
