Tonight on my way home from the office, I was scootering down this long, down-sloping hill from the University (think Olive Way, but forested), and I saw what I thought were cat-eyes glowing in the headlight. But no -

Foxes! At least two of the tiniest foxes I've ever seen, smaller than Tatsuko, with huge ears and almost cat-skinny tails, which I thought was odd. Not scared of me on the scooter, but they got off the road nonetheless.

That brings the number of different wild-mammal types I've seen on this slope of hill to three: opossum (a huge, fat one), raccoon, and now foxes.

We saw a big, long fox with a bushy tail near our house during a snowstorm, but these two must be babies.

Okay, now off to bed where I'll be covered in three small mammals soon enough.

Grinning with delight,
Chris

foxes

They were right at the bottom of the hill that goes up to campus (um, uh, the one that goes from 19th up and then angles up to Wescoe), right at the corner where the road splits into two. Right amid all those houses, just below the big lot by what used to be the Computer Center!

That's where I've seen the opossums and raccoons, too.

Best,
Chris

Re: foxes

Mere baby foxes are not going to be enough to lure me into braving the tornadoes to visit.* Coax a weasel into your living room, however, and I'll start pricing flights.

*They do sound awfully cute, though...

Re: foxes

Heh heh. Opossums are sorta weasels, right? Though Hope thinks they're smelly cats...

Tornado season ends in a week or two, so I hear. Then sauna season begins.

Local fauna

Foxes! Lucky thing. I've encountered two giant skunks. Yikes. One behind Fraser and one next to Robinson. God those things get big.

No sprays yet, though. Whew.

Re: Local fauna

Don't tell anyone, because I don't want to see them extinguished, but we have opossums living INSIDE the Wescoe building... well, in the cracks in the staircase, anyway. By where I park my scooter.

This little white head with a huge tooth-filled beak peeked up at me as I came to a stop, hesitated for a moment, then realized it should go back into hiding. Very small, must be a baby.
