This article suggests that radio astronomers have discovered evidence of a billion-light-year-wide hole in our universe that leads to another, parallel universe.

No, this is not the high concept of an SF story; this is a real astrophysicist's theory. Here's the cool diagram:

I dunno about this. I mean, as much as I want to live in an age where we discover evidence of cool stuff like superstrings, dark matter, and alternate universes, Occam's Razor suggests that perhaps leaping from "giant void in the universe" to "portal to a parallel universe" isn't the most reasonable thing to do.

Still, kewl. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gamera_spinning for the tip!

Signs of how my mind works: my first reaction to the image was, "Best witches hat EVAH!"

*g*

Yeah, it's a pretty ugly design, but it gets the point across.

I don't see the bit about this being a portal to a parallel universe.

Sorry, that's the first (text-anchored) link. The image links to the original finding.

"Scientists say"
"Astronomers collected"
"astronomers say"
"Some scientists are speculating"

I wonder if they interviewed anyone other than Laura Mersini-Houghton.

My search turned up nothing beyond her speculations, hence my reference to Occam's Razor. Still, had to pass this along to others! Awe-inpiring and all that. Or at least inspiring to SF authors *g*

There's a hole in the Universe, dear Liza, Dear Liza.

Hey, if you take that diagram and turn it 90 degrees clockwise, that would make a sweet hat.

I predict that a con-goer somewhere creates a hat based on that image this year.
