She was talking about his current wife, but apparently either hadn't been briefed that he was a widower, or had forgotten. Or she thought it was a cute and charming way to twist the knife.
Sister mine referred to it as "Palin's Asperger's Moment."
I think it more likely she didn't know, or knew and didn't care than that she didn't think about how it would feel to have someone say that to you when you'd lost a spouse.
