It's NPR pledge time here in the Midwest, so if you enjoy the benefits of this great service, show your support now! I just made my $60 pledge, which gets you a discount card for area businesses (I like this option because it doesn't cost KCUR cash like a tote bag or mug). If KCUR isn't your NPR station, support your local station.

Plus, y'know, the sooner the pledge drive ends, the happier we all are.

okay Chris - I have a question - why are there more 'strikes' on the inside or closer side of the moon than on the exposed side???

Did I ever tell you that I worked at KCUR while a student at UMKC in the 70s? That was lightyears away, technologically, but it was a lot of fun. Reel to reel tapes and record albums!!

Cool!

I worked at KDIO radio in Ortonville, MN, when I was a boy. Just as a fill-in for a friend. I remember the reels and records! And all the things that went wrong on a regular basis....

First of all, I think you have it backwards. The far side is positively loaded with craters; check it out:

Compare that to the near side.

The variation in cratering is evidence that the Moon has been tidally locked with Earth for most of its life. Lots of theories as to why this is the case, but most likely it's because the near side has large basaltic flows (the maria), which is both tougher than the standard lunar regolith and likely covered up a lot of pre-existing craters.

Hope that helps!

Oh that was a much better way to frame that question...different and your explanation makes sense - now I need to track down Will or ummm the varmit who told me the far side has fewer strikes...

Very cool photo too!!!!

You are the BOMB!!! Thank you so much!

Happy to have an excuse to think about astro-stuff! And this prompted me to make my first Astro-Image of the Day post in a long time.

yes! public radio, yes!

the best part is, since their programming is funded to the tune of 80% by regular old donors like you and me and not large corporations, the reporters can afford to actually present an unbiased story!

Yep, I pretty much only get my news from NPR these days. Once in a while I see a clip from the mainstream news, and... wow. Not only is it pretty clearly owned by conservatives, but its entertainment goals utterly fail.

Except for the weather-porn, of course. I do miss the weather-porn.
