This makes me tear up with joy to remember things like this. Why do other emotions like pain and suffering so often accompany great joy? Is there some kind of emotional spill-over from great emotion? Our emotional capacity fills up and then spreads among the other emotions?
So how does one determine the meaning of life for people like these American heroes? One could analyze it mechanistically, that they were defending life against destruction, good against evil, perpetuation against entropy... and thus fulfilling the programming dictated by their genes.
