This is fun: I just turned in the winners for two new English Department writing awards - the James E. Gunn SF Writing Award ($100 plus $200 scholarship toward Workshop); Award for Outstanding Technical Writing ($100 plus one-year student membership in the STC). I donated the moneys for these plus read the entries - fun to be a donor!

Ooo... did you have a lot of submissions? It's nice that it isn't just open to English majors.

You get a million lifepoints for that. :) Having been on the other end of a much needed writing award in a different category last year, I say... YAY YOU.

'Tis! That's why I did it, because it'd feel good and because I want to promote the Tech Writing and SF programs. If it weren't fun, well, I'd be less enthused.

The tech writing award only had about three real technical documents; the rest were essays, so that was easy to read for. The SF award had a bunch of entries, several of which were very good, so we offered to accept the runners-up into the Summer SF Workshop if they want.

Thanks! I won one when I was a student, lo these many years ago, and it felt so good that I wanted to share that excitement (in addition to the program-promotion notion).
