Gorgeous: Snow clinging heavy on the branches, making everything quiet and bright even after teaching night class (my last Tuesday class of 2009). Walking home from the University, I was a bit hesitant, what with an inch or more of snow on the sidewalks. But, alas! My new boots are awesome for blasting through the snow!

Yes, I've entered a new phase in my life. Since 2000 or so, I've worn only Double-H brand strap-and-buckle-and-zip boots, these puppies:

Well, one can no longer buy these in men's sizes. The pair I've been wearing is now a few years old, and considering that I wear them every day of the year, while working on cars, cutting down trees, crawling across asphalt shingles, and so forth, that's a pretty good record. But the straps are falling off, the zippers are failing, and they're generally beat to hell. I've continued wearing them only because I haven't found anything I like better. I mean, geez, you can't even get the traditional Dr. Martens tall, black boots any more - what I wore for several years before the Double-H items. They looked like these, only taller:

Well, a local store (Vanderbilt's for you locals) was having a boot sale after Thanksgiving, and though they carry both the Doc and Double-H, they had nothing I liked from those brands. But, hark! They did have another pair that I found sufficiently good-looking and comfy to boot (ba-da-boom). And I think they look like the boots that people wore on the Battlestar Galactica:

They're side-zip, like the Double-Hs, which means I can lace them to where I want, double-knot, and they're ready to pull on and off (especially handy in airports). But they cost half as much, weigh a couple hundred pounds less, are much more flexy, and - here's what prompted me to write this - offer complete traction in the snow and ice. Hooray new boots!

Which means I can enjoy the snow again. Life is good. If only the parking brake worked on the Saab - thereby enabling irresponsible cornering - life would be perfect.

I hate it when something I love is discontinued (bras in my case), but those bottom boots are nice.

Wow, zippers

at least one of those looked like the paratroop boots my father preferred when he was working outside (he did a lot of stuff on his hobby farm both before and after they moved out there). Steel toes, flexible but tough sole, etc. Safe to ride horses with.

Told him I wanted a pair and we went to the PX at Gebauer and tried to find a pair that fit. No luck 8-( If they'd had a zipper they would have been perfect, I have a really high-arched foot and the lacing would have been more of a pita than the shoes would be useful.

I can't wear cowboy boots for a similar reason, can't get my foot through the bend. Though my Renfest neighbor and friend Mary Axen showed up for the gem and mineral show wearing what amounted to cowboy boot 'mules' -- toe, lower part covering foot, high heel and enough of a back to keep it on the foot, but a 'mule'/slip on anyway.

Re: Wow, zippers

Yeah, the high arch is exactly why I've fallen for zip-boots and haven't gone back. This way, I can lace the hell out of 'em but still take them on and off.

I was getting seriously worried as winter approached and I still had no footwear.

I really like those top boots ... I wonder if I can find something like that. Yes, I don't really need them in rugged downtown Folkestone, but ... mmm, boots.

On the other hand:

If only the parking brake worked on the Saab - thereby enabling irresponsible cornering - life would be perfect.

a) be careful

b) you remain an inspiration when I think I'm getting old and boring again. Though I'm going to skip on irresponsble cornering as I am getting too many flashbacks to last year. I'll find something else to be irresponsible about.

Corcorans.. *sigh*... military brat memories flooding here.

I have enjoyed this post all out of proportion. For extreme winter wear, I recommend Matterhorns. You can stand around in the snow and ice all day in 'em. But you can't wear them during the summer or your feet will boil away into vapor, and then how would you kick-start your old bike?

I miss 'em.

Re: b): We only get as old as we allow ourselves to become. Once in a while, we recognize that we're getting old and reverse the trend. (Or get old. But I doubt you or I will suffer that fate.)

Re: b)2: I can imagine that might give you a cringe. Be secure in the knowledge that I never go skidding around corners at faster than a few knots of speed.

I'm thinking I might have a new brand for days when I need a dressy boot....

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Okay, I might need to get a pair of those. Y'know, for dressy occasions.

I couldn't find a photo of those awesome boots I inherited from your guy! Apparently no one sells them anymore :-( But as they see very little use (kind of for special occasions), they'll last a lifetime.

Yeah, I'll need a new summer pair of boots. These new puppies are light and all, but the nylon sides scream, "I don't breathe in the summer!"

(Or get old. But I doubt you or I will suffer that fate.)

Hope not, though I have to say that campus life is grinding down my soul this term. Really grinding down my soul, more than usual. The young things are really young this year, to the extent where it is difficult to find any point of contact other than that we are all human, and given I'm over 21 I'm possibly not human in their classification system.

Also ... Christmas. It's not for two and a bit weeks. I don't need the relentless 'It's nearly the end of term, yay, let's throw tinsel and chocolate everywhere'. Term ends next week. You have essays to write and hand in, children. Enough with the reindeer antler headgear and dressing up like Father Christmas. Save it until you've got those essays in.
