How to type special characters.

Ever wondered how to type special characters on a Windows computer? Here's a link to all the codes. Press and hold down the ALT key, then type the special code. You have to use the keypad on the right side of your keyboard, and the Num Lock needs to be turned on. For example: ALT + 0200 = È. The letter appears after you release the Alt key.

On the other hand, if you're using HTML view in LJ or making Web pages, just type these HTML special characters. For example: ampersand + trade + ; = ™.

My favourite is Alt+0151: the em dash. However, I'm on Linux, so no Unicode shortcuts for me.

You know.. soon after I learned about the ALT characters, I made myself a little chart of them. Heh. Didn't think to go look them up anywhere, just typed out the numbers until the characters started to repeat.

(I mosly use ALT 248 and 241)

I had an old Epson dot matrix printe back in the dark ages of the early 1990s that included a page in the manual with all those codes. Kept it for a long time.

Now, whenever I get a new computer, I import a bunch of macros so all I have to do is type something like /e'/ to get a é of /L/ to get a £, etc.

and in Microsoft Word ctrl-' e will also get you an é. (and other similar diacritical marks.
