Weather: Perspective is all.

The temps in Kansas and Minneapolis are about the same this week, yet the forecasts describe it differently. In Minneapolis, it's simply "Wind chills down to -5°F" while in Kansas it's "Bitterly cold," with no mention of numbers. Oh, and the coldest place I've ever lived (Peerless, Montana) continues to deliver: "Mostly clear, with a low around -23°F. Wind chill values as low as -33°F."

In similar news (especially for you, [livejournal.com profile] sf_reader), my photos from the first day of Snowpocalypse 2009™:

Here's a shot of my front yard snowscape. Snow is pretty in the sunshine.

To give you an idea of the total snowfall, those little black bumps are sidewalk lights, a little over a foot tall. It's much deeper now, and we're promised 2"-4" more over the next couple of days.

Yes, this man is walking his dog down the middle of the street. Sidewalks were impassible, and the few 4-wheel-drive vehicles out and about had cut some ruts for walking dogs.

You can see the layers of snow like geological strata in the front window.

Best,
Chris

I was surprised by more snow this morning - very rare snow for this area: large flakes that ended up very light and fluffy looking. It rarely snows here when it's cold enough for that.

I wonder if we'll have more of this kind of weather to look forward to, or if this is just making up for last winter being so mild.

The weather has been running 10-15 degrees colder here, than at my home town in northern Michigan. Friday night, the forecast low in Mackinaw City is 21 degrees higher than the low predicted here.

That's amazing.

Been doing some cross-country skiing, have you?

Yes, first time since (I think) December of 2000. I've missed it.

/sigh, and it keeps coming down here, as well.

At least it's nice snow - big and fluffy. But I'm getting a little tired of cleaning off my car twice a day.

I will say that my neighborhood is beautiful. But downtown never seems to wear snow well.

And hi! I hope you're having a happy new year so far.

The snow's nice here, too, but the city doesn't believe in clearing the roads. And you should see the ice rinks parking lots in town!

Hi! to you, too. So far, so good. Installed a new microwave oven last night to replace the craptacular one from the early 1980s.
