What is up with LJ today? I keep seeing links like this that fail to open comment pages or links: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1111&loc=http (and then the link address).

Speaking of being pissed off at authority, did you hear that the Supreme Court threw out the Wal-Mart discrimination case - not because of merit or lack thereof, but because the "class-action status – potentially involving hundreds of thousands of female workers – was too large."

Um, isn't that what a class-action suit is all about? Largeness? With this precedent, I can see corporations planning to market crappy or dangerous products simply marketing it far and wide enough that they can't get sued.

Fuck the Supreme Court. Also:

The presidency is powerless, congress is a joke, and now the supreme court has totally failed.

As citizens of the U.S. still living in our native country, we're pretty much fucked.

"viglink" is a "get paid by people clicking your links" linkjacking service - it rewrites the links people click on through their service, then pays the person who did the linkjacking if you buy something from the target site after clicking through.

Like all linkjacking services, it's a scam that adds nothing but waste and annoyance to your internet experience, and you should boycott any and all sites that use it, on principle.

Where are you seeing it?

Also: Without having read the decision itself, it appears that the USSC were divided between "the class is too big because that's bad for Wal-Mart" and "the class is too big because the allegations of discrimination are too different in too many of the cases - this is more correctly 3-5 other class action suits with more clearly-defined classes"

I figured as much - and it's probably why I'm getting dead links instead of seeing anything (my adblockers probably prevent LJ from working correctly).

I'm seeing it on LiveJournal! Almost all the outside links, even the "reply" links go through vglink today. Ugh. I don't want to leave my blog platform after so many years....

One of the nicest parts of coming home to Columbia is that I never again have to shop at Wal Mart.

From: [identity profile] theweaselking.livejournal.com

I'm not seeing it. Not on any of the LJ pages I use, not on your journal, not on your Friends page.

Which, uh, tells me that livejournal isn't the problem.

Are you surfing via a proxy? Proxies can rewrite content, and may be doing so to make money for the proxy owner.

Can you try a different web browser and try again?

Can you try with disabled addons?

I'm not getting those viglink things, either. LJ is slow and sometimes the pages aren't loading correctly, or I get the Sad Frank-Face Page, but I'm not getting re-routed like that.

From: [identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com

I am seeing the viglink clickthrough, but not on all links.

Very odd.

*Edited to add* Viglink is set up to monetize outbound traffic. It creates affiliate links when a link is set up to certain merchant sites. The kickback happens when someone purchases through that affiliate link.

But some of these Viglinks are to various journals, or comment links on journals...it seems like someone mucked up a code placement and it is wreaking havoc with LJ generally.

On a hunch, I killed Facebook and then reloaded IE9, and now I'm not seeing it anymore, either. Hm.....

From: [identity profile] weaselmom.livejournal.com

Yep, I was seeing it today too. I do NOT want to reload IE9. Let's blame our Russian overlords at LJ because they're handy and I'm in an irrational blamin' mood.

DOWN WITH THE KGB!

I was just thinking of you today - my workout music was the compilation you made for me one year, "Muscle and Hate." Awesome workout music. So much so that I might have overdid it a bit on the heavy bag....

Ugh. I'm irritated that it's happening AT ALL, not just to me, but that this is the new normal. I don't want to leave LJ! Facebook is an entirely different thing. Death to all corporations!

I skimmed through the decision, and the unanimous decision was indeed (among other things) that the "class" application was too large and differentiated in claims specifics to be treated as a single class as required under FRCP 32(a).

SCOTUS doesn't rule on fairness, but on the letter of the law, and all the justices agreed the case didn't meet the requirements under Rule 23, even though they disagreed on some of the particulars.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Good point - I'd like to see the lawyers re-up this as several, better-defined classes. Then those Wal-Mart execs can stop laughing over their 40-year-old Scotch.

Lj is a DISASTER!! this morning i got a really interesting error message, though. it was called a "vanishing error" LOL!!

i don't get how they can throw out a case because it is too large...i mean, wouldn't it make more sense to throw it out because it was too SMALL? being large would seem more like a reason to give it precedence.

anyhow. fuck 'em all.

eta: i just scrolled up and saw that it was too large because there were too many different allegations. that makes more sense to me, actually.

I am so pleased that it's still doin' its job!

I am less pleased that I'm still getting these viglink hijacks.

I really don't want to leave LJ. What's left, Blogspot? Dreamwidth? Facebook is not a blogging platform; it doesn't even have threaded conversations, much less tags and HTML formatting, integrated images - none of that. Hmph.
