It was brain washing, pure and simple. The preacher knew there would be people wondering why God would allow a 40 year old to just drop dead out of the blue like that, so he had to reassure us all that God had His reasons, and Al was now up in Heaven, so we shouldn't be sad for him, blah blah, magical thinking, blah.
