Foxes! Life update!

Just dropping in for a moment because 1) I'm still alive, and 2) I HAVE TO SHARE SOMETHING FANTASTIC!

On my way home tonight from the CSSF summer program's scholarship hall, a fox trotted across the road in front of me. I slowed down and pulled over, only to notice that this one little fox had joined up with THREE OTHERS! I've been seeing them almost every night. They look much healthier and larger than they did last year, and their tails now display big red poofs of fur in the middle.

No way could I have gotten a photo of them, so small and silent-swift in the night, so here's my little fox friend from a couple of years ago in the Colorado Rockies:

Life update: Yes, the Workshop is a wrap, and it was just wonderful this year. Two writers from Canada, one from South Africa, and several from across the USA brought unique writing styles and critique POVs, and it was a joy. Tiring as all get-out, but just great. The Campbell Conference in its new digs was lovely, our guests charmed all and the attendees had great conversations, and everyone made it home safely. Right now the SF Teaching Institute is underway, and the discussants are so lively that just a few questions keeps us going for three hours... and then into dinner and lunch the next day.

Pics to come of the events.

In summary: Hooray foxes! Hooray SF!

Chris

One Fox is an omen. Four foxes is a full-on Portent

Cool beans! A Portent for something cool, I presume.

Hooray!!

Also: Foxes are adorable. :) I'm so glad you have lots of them near you!

They are so charming!

Seconding both hoorays!

I'd much rather have foxes around than the bobcats the KDWP is reintroducing in my rural area. Barn cats are getting to be a threatened species.

Oh, and happy belated birthday!

Wow, barn cats going extinct due to bobcats? The world, it is full of freaky.

Sorry, that's excessive hyperbole on my part.

No, cats are still around all over the place, but some farmer friends of mine are having a hard time keeping their cats alive at their place, because the bobcats are killing them.
And, since the Humane society doesn't keep ferals around long, and insists on them being spayed and neutered, they don't want to go that route (ferals mostly already know how to hunt, whereas most fully domesticated ones don't do so well). Plus, they don't want to pay for them, even the small amount of the donation....

Me, I'd try to figure out a way to build a safe spot that the cats could get into but the bobcats couldn't, but that's sort of hard to do, really....

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-07-13 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Fascinating. Yeah, I don't suppose housecats are really ever going to put up a real fight against bobcats....

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2012-07-13 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only that-most of a cat's defenses against larger predators are to run and hide. A bobcat can go nearly anywhere a housecat can, unless the opening to the hiding place is very small, so....

I don't think I've ever seen a real, live fox. Wouldn't it be fun to try to capture night photos of them?

anyhow, glad the workshop was wonderful this year. I think it's pretty wonderful every year, though, yes?

They're beautiful and elegant. If you could manage to get shots of them at night, it would be magical.

Yes, the CSSF summer is FANTASTIC but SO TIRING.

I am! Trying to slowly edge back into having a life... except for the skimming two novels each day and prepping for discussion. Interestingly, that's way less energy-sapping and anxiety-producing than prepping for and running a simple conference with 50 people.

We see foxes fairly regularly in our residential neighborhood.

This past winter, we saw coyotes in Lawrence.
