Huge Powell's sale next week:
Powell's Books Biannual Square Deal Book Sale opens at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24, continuing three days through Thursday, May 26. The location is the same as always — Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square — and the hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. all three days.

Yeah, but even though we are going to miss the sale, just visiting the City of Books is a pleasure. Weeding through the huge stacks vitalizes me even at regular price. And you have the public library book sale...

I hit the Square Deal sale every year and always happily walk away with more than I anticipate to. (Of course, with all the house-clearing I've been doing lately, this time several hundred books there may have my name in them.)

I do miss working within a five-minute walk of the main store -- that sure made "going out for lunch" a uniquely pleasurable experience.
