Eeek! Imagine riding along the highway, you reach a corner, and then....

First a little background: A gravel truck (she lives in Omaha, where they need to gravel/salt the roads) had crashed on this corner earlier that day. Okay, you know what happens next.

She slips off the road, but manages to keep the bike upright. A good thing, too, because it's an 800-pound Harley. But when she reaches the ditch, the front wheel submarines into a couple of feet of gravel, stopping instantly. She's tossed off, and the bike lands on top of her, driving her into the gravel.

Her helmet was gouged; thank gawd she was wearing it. A biker friend -- Harley folks always seem to ride in packs -- lifted the machine off of her; apparently he's a huge guy. Damages: 21 stitches along one shin (that's after cutting through the chaps, jeans, and boots), a face full of gravel (Harley folks don't wear full-face helmets), and a broken -- get this -- shoulder blade. I didn't know you could break that and nothing else. Seems the bike crushed her.

Ouch.

Kij and I will be visiting her tomorrow when she's out of the hospital. I spoke with her today, and she said she's still spitting out gravel from where it was embedded in her face and sinuses.

(I can hear your "eeew" from here.)

Best,
Chris

Oh No!!!!

I am so sorry to hear about this accident! It sounds like the sort of thing that even the best riders in the world could only hope to walk away from. Thank God she wasn't riding alone. We both hope she has a complete recovery.

Re: Oh No!!!!

Thanks. We're going to visit her tomorrow when she's home from the hospital -- Kij comes down from visiting her family tomorrow, so we'll meet in Omaha for the first time since Christmas.

I hope for my mom's sake that her face isn't too torn up. She's newly single (have you seen my LJ posts this summer about that?), dating, and kinda vain about her appearance. Poor thing.

I cringe just thinking about it, remembering having a piece of gravel (my scar-tissue pearl >g<) removed years after an accident. But in the face? ugh.

How awful!!

Please give her my best wishes and sympathies... ouch.
Not to mention that 21 stitches *through* chaps, boots and jeans... I'm glad she's a safe rider and had those things on.

Mucho love and healing sending. e-me an address where I can send her a card through roya_spirit@livejournal.com

Oh, no! Oh what a nightmare. I'm so glad she was riding with someone else who could help. Gosh I hope she's ok and they can fix any facial scarring. That's gotta be the worst of it for her--I know that's what I'd be freaking out over, but I'm a vain creature.

Best wishes for her full recovery, Chris.

How awful! I'm very glad to hear that her list of damages is so short, considering it was an 800 pound bike. Her companion likely saved her more serious damages, with the immediacy of aid. I'm glad that she was so cautious and fully equipped while riding- sounds like the helmet took quite a blow. My good wishes to her.

Thank Goddess for helmets, boots, chaps, and jeans, good riding buddies, and being as safe as humanly possible. My best wishes to her for a speedy and complete recovery.

I've seen many occurrences of fall-down go-boom... Glad to hear that that she was wearing her safety equip, and that she's already on the healing path.

Thinking good thoughts,
A
