Hi folks -

I just read in the NYT online that many Dell (and other) laptops manufactured from about 2004 onward might contain faulty batteries which could overheat or explode. You can find if your Dell battery is one of the potential problems on the Dell website.

Warning: Other laptop and cell-phone manufacturers which use a particular type of Sony lithium-ion battery made in Korea have the same potential problem, but Dell is the first to do a recall. Expect other recalls - and be careful!

Best,
Chris

Dell's not really the first to do a recall; I bought a new Nikon D50 camera the middle of July and submitted the warranty information about a week after that. A few days later, Nikon sent an e-mail link to their website warning of problems with some Sony batteries used by the cameras bursting into flames. Luckily, my camera did not use a battery from the problem lot numbers.
