Some of you have heard this; it came up recently, so I define it here.

My theory is that suppressing something in one aspect of the self increases the pressure across the entire self. As with hydraulics, you cannot compress emotions, needs, fears, and so on: One of the properties of a liquid is that it can't be compressed, so too feelings, emotional needs, and so on. This is how hydraulic systems work: You apply a small amount of pressure in one place to move very heavy things in another place based on the size of the pistons and levers; picture a hand-operated hydraulic jack that can raise a car. So too emotions: If you push (suppress) a lot in one place, it can move you in other places you don't suppress. If there's no outlet for the pressure in a hydraulic system, liquids squirt out from weak spots like gaskets or joints. Similarly, emotions and psychological needs that are being suppressed squirt out in inappropriate places when there's no outlet.

Make sense?

Best,
Chris

"inappropriate places" but those are the best ones to squirt from......

It does make sense, just as sexual repression rears its ugly head in child molestation, spousal abuse and downright meanness.

It also suddenly clicks for me why my Brit family calls toddlers "little squirts".

I have this happen on a regular basis, a lovely inheritance from my father's nature. Misdirected anger.

Most of my friends refer to me as about as controlled as a Vulcan, and the analogy holds, since I'm actually extremely moody. Often, if I'm irritated about something else, it will tend to come out in inappropriate ways, if I let it.

I say 'sorry' a whole bunch. :^)

I dated a girl who had a head full of hydraulic fluid. She leaked.

Having observed many folks who fell drastically in love -- and having been there myself a couple of times -- I note that the opening of one emotional experience triggers an extreme general opening which can be used to clean up a herd of unexamined early rats nests.

It's more like if there's a breach in the wall, everything rushes for the opening. I suppose that pressure could cause strange leaks to appear -- but compared to having the walls fall down, it's a very stealthy phenomenon.

Yes. I agree. Of course there are good ways and bad ways of relieving pressure. The other thing is finding which part is doing the suppressing.

On the other hand, some people suppress all their lives and are probably more functional than I.
