Seriously, a few downed power lines and a few hours without power at home... not so biblical I think ;-). But hey! as long as we have a citywide power outage I'll have to go loot some supplies! Maybe a larger TV or some beer.

Well, the "Biblical" thing was referring to the floods that have seemingly washed away all of your area forest parks and mountainsides. But, whoah, 100-mph winds? That's the nearest thing to a tornado that I can think of. What's next? Volcanoes and earthquakes? Rains of frogs?

And that, my brother, is just one of many many houses that got smacked down. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Pacific Northwest, what happens is we get days and days and days of rain, which loosens the soil around the tree roots. Then the tail end of a low-pressure system comes through, and the winds tangle in the branches of trees (both deciduous and our ubiquitous evergreens), rip them out of the loosened soil, and jam them through your bedroom window. It apparently wasn't too bad up at S&J's, but there areas that are unreachable.

I can totally complain about Kansas weather, though. It's a hobby.

The volcano doesn't bother me. I live on a hill 500 feet up. Besides, your picture is flawed - that's not a Northwest volcano! Ours explode and blow half the mountainside into quarks instead of oozing, and they make lahars so everybody in the valley will drown in a river of mud. Yay!

Tornadoes, on the other hand, CHASE people.

I shouldn't joke about what happened on Mt. St. Helens. Even after all these years, it breaks my heart to think of it. I don't know what I'd do if Rainier went.

Seriously, it bothers you? I guess I always thought of it as something that just happens -- it wrecks the way everything looks and people and animals lose their homes (and lives), but natural disasters are not really disasters, they're natural. That said, I would be pretty sad if Rainier were a slag heap.

Actually we did have trees down in the neighborhood. This area used to have a horse racing track many many years ago (pre 1940 I think) and some of the Poplars that used to ring the track are still here. One of these came down. Fortunately at an angel to put it in the street and not in anyone's bedroom.

But yeah trees come down when conditions are right, about every 13 to 20 years for storms like this. Tornadoes have their very own season you know kinda like football....
