mckitterick: (ice-snow)
([personal profile] mckitterick Jan. 15th, 2007 01:40 pm)
It's sunny today and COLD (single digits) here in Lawrence today. My neighbor from across the street is running along the frozen sidewalk, towing his kids on a sled, and releasing them to go zooming past him. This is so Minnesota!

Winter is the best *g*

I would sled here but there is too much brush on the ground. I guess there is always the streets.

Thanks so much, Chris, for offering a welcoming place for Those of Us Who Like Winter. Up here in Nebraska, we are treated like outcasts. (Right, [livejournal.com profile] blzblack?) They...just...don't...UNDERSTAND!

It sounds lovely. Also identical to Rice Lake. :)

I love certain things about winter - deep, fresh snow on the landscape; snowy forested hills under the moon; the smell of the air. It would be easier to enjoy the snow if I lived somewhere that knew how to act, perhaps New England or the northern Midwest. But here? With all our hills and transplants from other places (California, Latin America, Asia), the region just stumbles to its knees. And it doesn't take much snow to put us there. I don't like walking on slippery surfaces (especially hills), so that takes away some of the enjoyment, but this REI walking stick with the tip that converts to an icepick is the best $60 I ever spent.

The only thing that's frustrating to me about this weather is that I finally have a rear-drive car that I don't have to worry about stalling in a spin (thank you, Papa Fuel-Injection), but its tires are too wide to attain any grip. Frick. It's a challenge just getting over the road's crown they're so wide and slippery. Every start from a stoplight is like trying to get going on a frozen lake or something. Of course, when I do get a little speed up and no one's around, it's crazy fun to toss the wheel and hit the gas just a little: Zoom! Donuts!

But yeah, it's gorgeous in the winter. The sky here tonight is absolutely clear - the kind of icy clear that only happens when the air is too cold to hold any moisture - and the ground is encrusted with a solid layer of frozen sleet and the air is so pure... lovely.

Chains? Cables? Snow tires? All-weather radials?

It is so weird to look outside and see the same snow and ice that have been with us since last Wednesday night. And they say some areas are going to get some more toward dawn, just in time for the Tuesday commute. Oh joy, oh rapture unforeseen.

I seem to recall these funky wire strap-on tread grabby things you can buy out in Seattle, but haven't seem 'em here. I'll check with the auto parts store tomorrow. Otherwise I'll need to get a spare set of wheels (narrower!) with winter tires to get around in the snow.

Enjoy your ice & snow! *g* (Oh, and try not to kill yourself walking on it. Use that Staff of Walking!)

Hssssssssss. Winter is EVIL! We've had single digit weather all week. With snow. On the ground! Still! Gah. I don't like it. Three snowfalls in lotusland and possibly a fourth on its way. WAAAAH!
