Here are a few of my pet squirrels.
squirrels partying down!
I can say this because they no longer run away when I watch them literally one foot beyond my sliding-glass back door! They're not even afraid of Tatsuko - watching them, perched on her pillow, tail lashing back and forth, in her most dragon-esque pose - so close that her nose leaves prints on the glass, inches from them. Wheee!

PS: The food-stuffs are Squirrel Feed™, sunflower seeds, and shattered gingerbread house. The stubby-tailed squirrel (one of my favorites) carries off hunks of wall and eats them in private by the fence.

Okay, back to writing a new story set in the atmosphere of Jupiter!

Squirrels are cool critters. We've got mostly black squirrels in our neighborhood (which makes it feel a bit like squirrel Mordor, I suppose) but occasionally catch a glimpse of the elusive red or brown squirrels.

If you enjoy watching squirrels, you probably would also enjoy having a bird feeder or three around the house (if you don't already). We've got a few that adhere to our windows and get to see cardinals and finches close up. Also the occasional frustrated blue jay (frustrated because he's too big for the perch). The mourning doves just hang out on the ground under the feeders and eat what falls. Smart birds. :-)

"Squirrel Mordor" - I love that!

Yes, I have a bird-feeder... which a clever squirrel promptly destroyed in the fall! He climbed down the hanging-cord (I hung it under the garage eves), held on upside-down with his hind feet, and chewed the plastic bird-perches out of the body of the feeder, allowing the feed to pour out onto the ground.

Clever squirrel.

Bird sightings today (I put food out front, too) included a variety of finches, a boy cardinal, a red-headed woodpecker, and two boy blue jays, among others. Also bunnies. Doing my duty to keep the neighborhood wildlife healthy in the cold!

You do know that early colonists kept squirrels as pets, right? There are tons of drawings of early New Yorkers (well, maybe they were New Amsterdamers) with their (leashed) squirrels.

OMG: leashed squirrels. *ded* from the cute

When I was a boy, my dad's house in Minneapolis had a giant elm tree festooned with families of squirrels. They'd come up to me and eat peanuts out of my hand, their little paws stepping lightly on my fingers. SO CUTE!

Oh, friend to rodents, go check out this series of adorable rat piccies in Cute Overload!
It's a shame ratties don't live longer, as I hear they make sweet, intelligent, affectionate pets!

They "brux", which is a grinding of the teeth. Like cat purring, they do it when very comfortable and happy or when scared. If they're really happy, the bruxing gets so vigorous that their eyes pop in and out; this is called "boggling."

I think rats are great. They're sociable, intelligent, and curious. They're pretty clean, too. The only drawback is their short (2-2 1/2 year) lifespan. Sigh.

Their other drawback is that Julie is allergic to them.

Oh the awful cuteness—you have got to get a zoom lens so we can see the little lagomorph expressions on their faces!

Wild pets

Nice picture there. It does seem that at least one was aware of yourself. Keeping an eye on you for the *just in case* stuff.

The discarded hulls look suspiciously like confetti. Are you sure they aren't cleaning up after a birthday party?
