mckitterick: (ice-snow)
([personal profile] mckitterick Jan. 22nd, 2007 11:13 pm)
I'm only now beginning to warm up a little. At first glance, a temp of 18F doesn't seem that cold, but riding 30mph on a scooter through such a temp makes one freeze to death! Holy schmoly, it's cold. And my dumb helmet face-shield was fogging over, because my helmet is old and crappy and needs to be replaced, so I had to open it enough to increase airflow over the exposed skin of my face in order to see the road ahead. Holy Jesus and Mary, save me from this Ninth Level! I should mention that I only had to ride about two miles home from the KU carpool place (after dropping off Nate; it's cool that we both teach at Edwards on Mondays), but it felt like riding through a thousand miles of frozen wasteland, blind, in the dark.

On the other hand, the Crossfire would have spun out on the ice.

Woof.

Great, I'm cold just hearing about it! Make some coco, and stick your feet in it!

I just shivered from simply thinking about it again.

Must wear a warmer coat next week. And long-johns.

You also need to have a scarf and a face-mask knitted hat. Anything but exposing skin to artificial wind-chill!

Well, I did wear my fake-turtleneck-thingy made just for such occasions, which saved my neck. But a face-mask would be good. My forehead positively ached by half-way home.

No way I'm taking off the helmet to wear a hat, not with roads in this condition!

Well that is why the stocking cap -- you don't have much hair, so a stocking cap should go under the helmet just fine.

So what's the forecast? Am I going to be two places in two weeks that require thermal underwear? ;)

Brrr....

I'm bringing your grandmother's vintage fake fur, and I bet I'll live in it.

Heeee, that sounds perfect! You can wear the matching hat while you're here, too *g*

Can i find it funny that the person with the most vechiles dosen't have one that is practical for this situation

I would, except that the stupid auto-parts stores in this town don't carry traction devices! Geez. I hear that it sometimes gets icy in Kansas....

Try Cabela's ( you might want to call first) 913-328-0322

Napa on Iowa has chains in stock (I just called them) call about your tire size 843-9365

There's a reason that people in Canada stow their motorcycles for the winter! :)

Stay warm.

Yeah, but I live so close to campus that it would be silly to drive up there, and it's too far from the carpool lot to walk, so I'd have to scoot back home, get the car, then drive back to get the carpool vehicle. Sigh. Well, I do keep my actual motorcycle in the garage during the winter *g*

Perhaps I should start riding with my full-body rainsuit again, as I did in Seattle winters (motorcycling on the highway in near-freezing temps during rain sucked even more than this, of course).

You know, you COULD call for A RIDE!! Hint. Hint.

(My only transportation used to be a moped, I know exactly what you are talking about.....)
