There's a family of blackbirds in my front yard right now having a picnic in the wet grass. The parents are shiny black so dark their heads look like polished purple metal, and the little ones are spotty brown over black. They're poking their beaks into the little ponds all over the front yard, left-over water from last night's huge downpour.

Ha! A young squirrel just leaped from one branch to another, missed, and landed in a puddle. Now he's eating the little helicopter-seeds in the grass. No harm done, I guess. Young'uns are all made out of rubber.

Best,
Chris

Those birds are Grackles. The littler brown ones are the females.
They're a nuisance bird, as they bring ticks into your yard and will poop all over everything once they get attached to your area... shoo them away!
I love this guy's descriptions of their noise.

Speaking of being made out of rubber...a few years ago in a park in KC I saw two squirrels fighting very high up in a very tall tree when one lost its footing and fell several dozen feet to the hard dirt/gravel ground (no grass there). It hit the ground so hard and I figured it was dead. Then after a couple of seconds it got up and ran back to the tree.
