Here's hopeful news: The Senate subpoenaed the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney's office Wednesday, demanding documents and elevating the confrontation with President Bush over the administration's warrant-free eavesdropping on Americans.

Does this mean that the Senate has grown a spine at last? That they finally realize they're part of a "checks and balances" system after a term and a half of amnesia? Does this signal a return to Constitutionality in the White House? Do I see a glimmer of hope for our country?

Perhaps, but I won't hold my breath until it goes through. Expect the Bushies to stonewall past the end of their term, and expect the corporate media (I like [livejournal.com profile] gmskarka's term) to phrase things in the language of partisan politics rather than what this is: the last thrashing of an administration attempting to convert the US to a Fascist state.

Good luck, everyone, and let's hope this leads to something good. I do feel a litle optimistic, because this action by the Senate sounds a little like the failure of Fascism in America.

Best,
Chris

Intersting - perhaps a little of each, with corporate America conjoined with the NeoCons, using Bush-Cheney as puppets.

I just like the fact that the Senate subpoened its own president. :)

Which is, sadly, the dodge that Cheney's now trying to use to avoid the subpoena. And that little freaking crumb of a press secretary is harping about how it's an interesting philosophical exercise, and won't pursue it further. Hah! Funny!

No, it's a legal dodge, not an exercise - and whether it gets pursued further is up to congress... and hopefully the courts.

Don't say "hopefully the courts," because the highest court in the land will support the idiots-in-chief.

Yeah, I paused there. I have not forgotten that the precious "balance" of the three branch system has been... destroyed.

Let us hope the spine continues to mature and is given support from any and all surrounding musculature. Because the last time they seemed to have a spine (troop withdrawal timetable), it snapped like a twig when Bush called them names.

Bush keeps vetoing stem cell legislation because he is terrified that Congress will use them to grow spines.

Really.
