What was that huge jet that just buzzed Lawrence?

EDIT: Okay, this time I made it outside in time to see two military fighter-jets flying in formation at low altitude over town. WTF?

Maybe... but what do jet fighters have to do with college football? Is this some kind of recruiting tool to entice college f-ball fans to join up and be cool enough to fly fighter jets over towns?

They often do fly-overs for events in town such as homecoming, the St. Pat's Day Parade etc.
I'll bet someone on the larryville forums knows the reason why.

(Tin-foil hats on, folks!)

I was kinda freaked out by it too, don't know that it's good to know what it was, though. Yikes.

And here they come again..! Big WTF!

Is there an Air Force base nearby, or are our tax-dollars funding long-range hooey flights?

Forbes Field Topeka.
Whiteman AFB, Missouri (home of the B-2 bomber)

So THAT is what I heard. I had just turned on the shower and thought my plumbing was about to explode.

That was kinda freaky. And they seem to keep circling.

Yes.

I remember a few years ago feeling like a jet was trying to part my hair while I was getting gas - it was doing a fly-by of the stadium for homecoming, as I found out later.

I'll be in my bunk(er).

(I'm down in the EBL.)

This happens every year, for Homecoming. Once they flew so close to Wescoe, I could see the pilot through the little bubble-window, and the windows shook.

No, I have no idea why.

Re: One possibility.. funeral today in Holton

Maybe they wait to hold such funerals until Homecoming weekend to, y'know, kill two birds and all that.

Re: One possibility.. funeral today in Holton

That would be amusing, but there are far too many of those events going around lately.

A viewpoint from a military brat...

I'd say that some of it has to do with the fact that a great many of our pilots up there are college alumni and enjoy showing the crowd a bit of what the jets are all about. Also, some of our fallen warriors are alumni, and that factors into military decisions to do fly-overs for University events.
and heck... it IS getting close to Veterans' Day.

From: [identity profile] roya-spirit.livejournal.com

Like any other big business, the military does have a budget for marketing/advertising and what they call "community relations".
And that's not hooey ;)

...and yah, no matter how I feel about warfare and all that, there is still that military brat in me that is proud of the people who are willing to die so that we can live in freedom.

Are you about to get over run again by zombies?

Saw the two jets too, from the big west windows in the bookstore. My guess is the same as everyone else's, they were practicing for a Homecoming flyover. There was supposed to be a helicopter flyover at the last home game, BTW, but it was rained out.

The most startling Homecoming flyovers I've experienced is when they've broken the sound barrier.

P.S. Saw a very cool thing from the same west windows a few weeks ago - a P-51 Mustang. The distinctive propeller noise caused me to look. It was impressively fast.

It was only a test. You will forget this tomorrow. Or you had better, or the black helicopters will be making passes.

From: [identity profile] queza7.livejournal.com

But it is tomorrow, and you just made me remember it, not forget it... :D

I wonder, if you do a funeral for a soldier, if you can request a fly-by. I know you can request a firing squad salute.
If one the the Air National Guard passed away they might do it for him, right?
-shrug-

Well, I doubt the helicopters can get through the pharmacy doors, so I think I'm safe. ^^

I was at the KU/Nebraska game. It was a planned flyover of the stadium.

I didn't even blink at the flyovers on Friday b/c everyone was talking about the Homecoming stuff. But, rarely there are big military caravans on I70 (very rarely) - and I always begin to fear martial law or that something is in the works.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

The day that we see our govm't try to impose martial law across our country is the day people will finally wake up. I guess that's the only positive about our military being over-stretched in the Middle East.

just one side note they were navy not airforce and the planes were f-18.

Interesting: What's the Navy doing in this part of the country? *g*
