What was that huge jet that just buzzed Lawrence?

EDIT: Okay, this time I made it outside in time to see two military fighter-jets flying in formation at low altitude over town. WTF?

Maybe... but what do jet fighters have to do with college football? Is this some kind of recruiting tool to entice college f-ball fans to join up and be cool enough to fly fighter jets over towns?

They often do fly-overs for events in town such as homecoming, the St. Pat's Day Parade etc.
I'll bet someone on the larryville forums knows the reason why.

Like any other big business, the military does have a budget for marketing/advertising and what they call "community relations".
And that's not hooey ;)

This happens every year, for Homecoming. Once they flew so close to Wescoe, I could see the pilot through the little bubble-window, and the windows shook.

No, I have no idea why.

I'd say that some of it has to do with the fact that a great many of our pilots up there are college alumni and enjoy showing the crowd a bit of what the jets are all about. Also, some of our fallen warriors are alumni, and that factors into military decisions to do fly-overs for University events.
and heck... it IS getting close to Veterans' Day.

Saw the two jets too, from the big west windows in the bookstore. My guess is the same as everyone else's, they were practicing for a Homecoming flyover. There was supposed to be a helicopter flyover at the last home game, BTW, but it was rained out.

The most startling Homecoming flyovers I've experienced is when they've broken the sound barrier.

P.S. Saw a very cool thing from the same west windows a few weeks ago - a P-51 Mustang. The distinctive propeller noise caused me to look. It was impressively fast.

I wonder, if you do a funeral for a soldier, if you can request a fly-by. I know you can request a firing squad salute.

I didn't even blink at the flyovers on Friday b/c everyone was talking about the Homecoming stuff. But, rarely there are big military caravans on I70 (very rarely) - and I always begin to fear martial law or that something is in the works.
