So this country that BushCo seems determined to attack? Here's a wonderful photo-tour of Iran.

If only we can keep the NeoCon loons from making things worse before they're removed from office, perhaps one day we can visit this beautiful country. After seeing these photos, I want to go!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] arian1 for the tip.

Best,
Chris

Avedon Carol at The Sideshow had a link to some wonderful pictures of Iran today -- I think it was the same group on Picasa. When you see things like that, you wonder why the War Drum Guys are allowed to occupy so much air space.

If not for the fact that Saddam had made Iraq a crappy place for pretty much everyone, and the fact that Bush made it even worse, I'd love to visit the place for its antiquities. Iran sounds interesting too. (I haven't had a chance to follow your link yet, however.)

Yeah, I had always wanted to visit Iraq, cradle of modern civilization. All this just pisses me off.

Uhm. I like the buildings. They do some pretty sweet looking things with lights and the colors on their palaces and what not. Makes the White House boring.

The architecture is absolutely lovely in Iran. When you invent algebra, you also come up with some really amazing architecture :)

Several of the older buildings were constructed to channel air through narrower and narrower passages, creating what you could call the first modern air conditioning.

I'd love to visit, but they have to stop the religious persecution against my people first.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

If we were to leave them alone, their religious dictatorship would collapse and the people would eventually gain control of their country. I believe that hands-off would result in real democracy over there. Then your relatives and the other minorities over there would have a real voice again.

I doubt that would solve the religious persecution issues. Although not nearly as bad under the Shah, it was still there.

As a general policy, I do believe in being hands off. No more of this playing one side off the other and hoping the two will kill themselves off.

I sympathize. But don't let the actions of a government or a minority of idiots reflect on the whole of a country. It's simply not the case.

I know it's a leadership of the minority, but that's small comfort when you've lost your job, your freedom, or your life.

I'm not at all sarcastic when I say that I'd love to visit. It's just not anywhere remotely near safe for me to do so at this time.

You could actually go right now if you wanted. Don't believe all the hype. Iranians are facinated with Americans on a personal level, even if the government might follow you around a bit. They would probably go out of their way to show you how NON-threatening they are. You can get flights in through Turkey or Germany actually last I checked.

Huh!

Of course, going through Turkey right now sounds even more dangerous.

I finally got around to viewing the pictures. They are nice. However, quite a few appear to be lifted from other sites, often without proper attribution. A few are not even from Iran; they should be removed.

From: [identity profile] steve98052.livejournal.com

Several have logos indicating a source. They're not all the same mark, which suggests that they're taken from a variety of sources. There's nothing along the lines of "used by permission".

Worse, at least one person wrote a reply posted a request to properly attribute a picture of a mosque or remove it, and linked his own site, which had a higher-resolution version of the same picture. Not only that, someone posted a link to a desktop background art site that included a higher-resolution version of a picture of a dirt road through a woods – apparently in Pennsylvania.

Still, they're great pictures, and I'm sure most really are from Iran.

Also, it's sad to see the hate expressed in some of the replies. That sucks.

Yes, I had to stop looking at the comments -- so much hate and ignorance.
It seemed to mostly come from one or two snarkers, but they were sooo busy!
And incredibly racist. Why couldn't an Iranian girl have blue eyes? And they apparently have confused modern Iran with the Iran of Khomeni, with all the "it'll be the last time anyone sees her face" and "notice how the woman's standing behind the man" comments.

It looks like a beautiful and diverse country. Steve's right about some of the photos being lifted. And most of them do seem to be Iran.
