For many of us, Speed Racer was a childhood icon. I could not tell you the plot of a single episode except that he raced a lot, but who can forget that epitome of race-car design, the Mach 5? It exudes sex appeal and speed and is the epitome of 1950s sports-racer design combined with 1960s wildness and movie-car exuberance. For many of us, this is how a race car should look:

Here's the official website, oddly devoid of trailers (click the image to see trailers). The Wachowski Brothers (!) are behing this one, due out in May. No, I am not expecting a quality movie (if you watch the trailer, you'll understand); I am, however, very much looking forward to watching those sexy cars race across the big screen!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] darkyak for the tip.

PS: Oh, and everything's better with a monkey.

I lived in Tokyo in the mid to late 60s because my dad was in the Air Force. Living on the base, it was in many ways just like being in the US, but I still remember watching Speed Racer every day, only it was in Japanese. Not sure how much of it I really understood, but I loved my Speedy.

BTW, did you see the GEICO commercial last year that they were showing all the time with Speedy and Trixie and the Monkey? LOVED IT! I only wish they'd kept showing it (better than the talking gecko). Takes me back, I tell you. (And you bet I'll be going to see the movie when it opens.)

Yeah, the place I remember watching it was on base in Kansas. We had no TV in Korea - and I once again have no TV, so I missed those ads.

The only episode that I recall is one where the cars were racing against this mamoth train-like car that was made out of gold and painted. The bad guys were trying to smuggle all the gold out of the country.

Yeah, I'm very happy with the updates they made. Even sexier (dare I say) than the original!

Sheeit.

I can not only recount episode plots, I can tell you what each of the buttons on the steering wheel does -- and the "H" one in the homing-robot control compartment as well.

I wasn't very picky about cartoons as a kid, but that was one where I just didn't understand the appeal.

A Land of the Lost remake would be cool though.
