mckitterick: (ice-snow)

So last night, some jokers decided it would be funny to turn off the power to large parts of Lawrence. Just in time for the night after our first big winter storm. Hooray and all that.

One of my favorite things about losing power is that my fire alarms - cleverly wired into the household power supply (what kind of idiot designer thinks that's a good idea?) - beep for minutes after the power outage. The power briefly came back on at about midnight, just long enough to recharge the batteries on the fire alarms, then shut down again, making the beeping resume. Ah, joy. I was trying to sleep, what with not going out due to the hazardous condition of the roads, so this was the best of all worlds. Yay!

Oh, and did I mention that I was right in the middle of the fine film, "They Came From Beyond Space," based on Joseph Millard's book, The Gods Hate Kansas? Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

Best,

You know, I know being without power is really inconvenient, but man I wish I were somewhere where there was snow! It was somewhere in the mid 60s here last night, and downright warm right now (although Sunday night a front is coming in that will make most of next week rainy and mid 50s, so that'll be nice).

Oh, and today's high is supposed to be 82. I'm already not in the holiday mood, but that kind of weather makes it even harder to try to pretend to get in the holiday mood.

Wow. The high temps from last night and today put together don't add up to... let's see... 55. Hm.

Stuology, you smarty-pants. Buried power lines, eh? Feh, them's are for wussies! You don't get the same drama as we who live in neighborhoods full of ancient, dangling wires!

We have buried lines - but our power cut in and out - just enough to shut my PC down in the middle of 72-hour paper-writing marathon s couple times (any suggestions on UPS brands - because I've sent this one back to CyberPower five times).
It didn't stay off - but the power "blinked" a bunch last night. I finally took a 3 hour nap because it was too distracting to work.
