Irritating thing! Somehow it got installed recently, and I can't figure out how to uninstall it or keep it from signing me in.

Help!

Thanks,
Chris

Windows XP with SP2

Click Start / Run Then type the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Press ENTER

(With %windir% being your window's directory, of course)

I'm so glad Chris asked this and you responded. I got that lil sniper on my new unit too, and now.. BWAAAHAHHA! Take that! I shoot it back down.

Aw, yeah; it's very satsifying to kill the little buggar.

Done! Thanks.

And I figured out what caused this pain: I recently bought myself a lovely new ergo keyboard with leatherette wrist rest... and it needed the new Microsoft Intelli-software... and it seems I got a "bonus" program install with it! Yay! I discovered this while typing just now and got a popup saying that the Messenger key had been disabled.

Heh heh. Take it, Messenger!

Heh. I was going to suggest finding your startup file and removing it. Silly me.

Y'know, I did recently have to flash my BIOS. Seems that the ol' Dell laptops are having trouble with the newest security and other software out there. Now it works like a charm!

I went through and deleted the messenger.exe file from all of my computers. That little program is bad news, I tell ya.

No kidding. And it shows up just when you don't want it!

That doesn't always work. Sometimes Windows automatically restores programs if it discovers that they're missing or damaged.

Right - almost certainly it'll be restored if removed that way. I thank stuology for the uninstall info.

You can also check under "services" and stop it from there.. (under admin tools)

Y'know, I did that. And I disabled it from running in the background. And even set its registry startup interval to something like a million years. But still.

Tricksy thing.

Deleted now, though, thanks to Stu!

A million years, huh? *laugh*

Well, I'm glad you got rid of the persistent lil bugger. I had a heck of a time with it too.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Well, I set it for a very long interval, which didn't help. Seems that my laptop's Fn+arrow-down keys together launch it. Now they just launch a new instance of IE. Stupid shortcut keys.

Well, sure, if I wanted to be trapped forever in an Ellison-esque world of untouchable computing, where every attempt at changing configuration could spell my doom!
