So many of you made good arguments (in response to my anti-college-sports post) about how athletics help universities. I buy it, though I still don't like how much energy colleges expend on such non-academic activity.
Last Saturday, I did watch - with
starstraf, Pooch, Jony and Chelsie, and
jamer_31 and his girls - KU trounce all over North Carolina, and I'll be watching as KU plays their final enemy of the year (Memphis, I believe).
Rock Chalk Jayhalk! Go KU! (Click to hear the history of the chant.)

Click the Jayhawk to see the story of the name, "Jayhawk."
(There, am I absolved? *g*)
Best,
Chris

(I suppose since KU is Big 12, I'll have a mild interest in them winning over Memphis, but I won't actually be watching the game, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out the outcome.)

I swam in high school and practiced at a YMCA instead of the high school. The drive was 1 hour a day at least. This is because my school didn't have a pool or nearly as good of a swimming program as the YMCA I went to.
Imagine if the high school had a pool and a good program. Would've saved tons of money, gas, etc.
As soon as you put sports out of school this would be the analogy for all sports.

Cooome to the daaaark siiiiiide!
Hey, if even I get excited over it, and I'm an ignorant dork on most if not almost all team sports, then it's a dark side worth visiting ;)
Besides... there's Beer. And chips. And BBQ. And I have a gearhead gene in me, so I got's to watch *something* testosterone-laden, right?
I wish that scholars could get as good of scholarships as athletes too, .. and I've seen how they FEED those athletes, .. but that's another argument, isn't it?
Enjoy the game, hopefully they'll give us a celebration to be had later.
R, who still finds it funny that for the first TEN years I lived here I never saw a game, owned a KU ANYthing, and thought the Jayhawk was a weird mascot. Now I have four sweatshirts, watch games, even tailgate some. (psst..But I still think the Jayhawk is a funny choice for a mascot)

In how I see things, every college athletic scholarship recipient that goes pro before graduation is money wasted. I would like to see the pro sports associations, NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, etc. be forced to repay all scholarship monies given to any athletes that are drafted by these organizations. If pro sport organizations want to use the NCAA as a farm team system, then they should have to pay for the privilege.
