Okay, this is exciting as all get-out. A new study reveals methane in the atmosphere of Mars, suggesting that Mars is still alive, either biologically or geologically.

And to my inexpert eye, this picture does not show "questionable polar icecaps." Perhaps our problem is not so much where we've been landing as expectations. We've been so programmed, as a culture, to expect Martian life to be A: Complex, B: Intelligent (even if not civilized) and C: Vaguely Humanoid or at least, recognizable to us.

What I complained about on our KC mailing list is that the data was from 2003, and it seems to me that making a big announcement 6 years after you determined something is more than a bit peculiar.

I mean, if you did that with birth announcements, the kid would be in first grade before anyone heard about it.
