Dear friends -

Finally, I've heard from the editor at Tor who's had one of my novels for, what? Three years now? He wants to see the rest of another novel, part of which I sent him a couple months ago. Wants to do that one first if he likes it because the first one is "too long and difficult for a first novel," in his opinion.

Well, heck, that's exciting compared to no movement, eh? I better finish it and clean it up! Wish me luck.

Excelsior!

Ah, for the days when first novels could be long and difficult... but having it come second really wouldn't be so bad, either!

Thanks, mister! I'll be sure to let you know if that happens.

True -- if the first one does reasonably well (this assumes he buys either, of course), people might be more able or interested in a tougher read. Hm, thanks for the uplifting thought!

Yippee! In bocca al lupo!

(Is that anthology in our local bookstores yet?)

Congratulations! Getting that level of interest is great. I don't think it matters which book he wants first, as long as there's a contract coming soon.

Just out of curiousity, when did editors start reviewing "parts of a novel"? I was always under the impression that they wanted the whole thing.

I like long difficult first novels. It means I probably won't get bored with the author.

All Right!

Good luck and congrats and I can't wait to see it in print!

Thankee! Not sure if our regular local bookstores will get copies, but I bet the Oread Bookstore (in the Kansas Union) will -- they carry all the local authors.

True; let's hope I see a contract-type thingy.

Usually, editors want "three chapters and an outline," though if they ask for something they usually want you to send the whole shebang. Because he's been sitting on the previous novel (Transcendence) for so long, I didn't want to send all of Empire Ship unless he was excited about seeing it (read: Willing to get back soon).

Me too. Well, of course I like 'em if that's what I want to write, eh? The one he wants to see in toto right now is about half the length of the other, thus more marketable, I hear. Sigh.

Good luck my friend! :) Nothing but good wishes!

Chris,
Well deserved. I am rooting for you. Go get 'em.

All I know is your short fiction, but based on that my fortune cookie for Chris McKitterick reads:

SOLD!

I'm jumping Up and DOWN!! I'm so excited for you!!

Wow.

Feeling a little less grumpy today?

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Well, let's hope that your cookie manufacturer is on the same wavelength as the Tor offices....

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Awesome

I sure will... but first that irritating "finish the thing" part.

Thanks,
Chris

That gave me a grin. Thank YOU for posting such interesting stuff.

A shame I can't watch! Though I can picture it. I'll keep my excitement down to a manageable level myself, because (due to experience with Tor) I have pretty much no faith in hearing anything anytime soon. Sigh. Nonetheless, it's tangible progress!

Yes, definitely less grumpy. Very much less!

Hugs,
Chris

Fantastic news! My hope is that you sell him both in short order!

When. . .

When this book gets published, you can all look for my tell-all book, "Chris McKitterick: Bad-Ass (except at Duke Nukem and Paintball)" available by ordering direct.

Re: When. . .

Hardee har har har. I seem to recall that the one time you got me in paintball involved my being in a firefight with someone else when you happened across my fully exposed self. Which you promptly hit with, what? A thousand balls?

I still owe you for that one, sucka!

Hey, another reason to get on LJ: You can see my locked posts -- things only specific people can see. Much of what I post is thus locked. Of course, you'll have to be nice for me to allow you to read 'em >g<

Congratulations, or something like that. It's good to know that they don't think you suck, they just think you might scare people (or something like that).

I kinda miss the good old days of challenging (nay, demanding) first novels.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Yeah, so do I. In fact, for the Campbell and Sturgeon Awards this year, we've decided to specifically ask for "groundbreaking" work. Used to be that's the kind of thing editors would seek in order to keep their line alive, and it often came from people new to the field.
