Tor editor responds!

Dear friends -

Finally, I've heard from the editor at Tor who's had one of my novels for, what? Three years now? He wants to see the rest of another novel, part of which I sent him a couple months ago. Wants to do that one first if he likes it because the first one is "too long and difficult for a first novel," in his opinion.

Well, heck, that's exciting compared to no movement, eh? I better finish it and clean it up! Wish me luck.

Thankee! Not sure if our regular local bookstores will get copies, but I bet the Oread Bookstore (in the Kansas Union) will -- they carry all the local authors.

Congratulations! Getting that level of interest is great. I don't think it matters which book he wants first, as long as there's a contract coming soon.

Just out of curiousity, when did editors start reviewing "parts of a novel"? I was always under the impression that they wanted the whole thing.

True; let's hope I see a contract-type thingy.

Usually, editors want "three chapters and an outline," though if they ask for something they usually want you to send the whole shebang. Because he's been sitting on the previous novel (Transcendence) for so long, I didn't want to send all of Empire Ship unless he was excited about seeing it (read: Willing to get back soon).

Me too. Well, of course I like 'em if that's what I want to write, eh? The one he wants to see in toto right now is about half the length of the other, thus more marketable, I hear. Sigh.

A shame I can't watch! Though I can picture it. I'll keep my excitement down to a manageable level myself, because (due to experience with Tor) I have pretty much no faith in hearing anything anytime soon. Sigh. Nonetheless, it's tangible progress!

Yeah, so do I. In fact, for the Campbell and Sturgeon Awards this year, we've decided to specifically ask for "groundbreaking" work. Used to be that's the kind of thing editors would seek in order to keep their line alive, and it often came from people new to the field.
