Answer: These are the "only images ever taken of a transit of a space shuttle and the Hubble Space Telescope in front of the Sun, during the last repair mission of Hubble, obtained from Florida at 100 km south of the Kennedy Space Center on May 13th 2009."

The first image shows "during the last Hubble repair extra-vehicular walkout. We are looking at the top of Atlantis and Hubble, with the angle to Atlantis coming from a little towards the tail." The second image was taken as Atlantis was "halfway to Hubble, at a distance of only 260 km. Duration of the transit: only 0.3 second. The thin silhouette confirms that the cargo bay doors were opened."

Neat stuff!

Best,
Chris

Wondrous indeed! though I thought it looked far too fake and clear in outline :).

I know! Pretty impressive to have captured such a sharp image in such a brief instant.

My initial response when I first saw Legault's photo was that it had to have been photoshopped. When I realized it wasn't. Well...freakin' cool.

I officially want to change my vote to "modern art." I'll leave why as an exercise :).

Well, it totally IS modern art, now that I think of it!

I thought it was a superficial spreading melanoma.

How the hell did they filter out the intense backlight enough to get a sharp shuttle outline?

A solar filter for astrophotography prevents all but the most miniscule amount of light from entering the telescope. It's pure contrast!
