This is one of the saddest cartoons I've ever read:

Brave little Spirit Rover, we appreciate all the amazing work you've done!

EDIT: I hope she gets a chance to update her LJ: [livejournal.com profile] spiritrover.

I thought it was weird that I found this cartoon extraordinarily sad. I'm glad you agree. Poor guy, he's stranded and all alone, right before he's going to die.

I never thought Spirit Rover's story would end this way. Were they going to bring it home - was that the plan?

If they don't want us to be sad about stuff like this, they need to stop giving them names.

Because otherwise, like a right-thinking little rover, she would have refused to go!

...or would have bravely done her duty knowing that it would end with dust in the slow dying of the light.

Quit it! I am at work and cannot drown my sorrows in drink at the moment!

This made me really sad, too. I wished there were another panel (or maybe the mouse-over text) that showed how proud of it the scientists were. Poor little lonely robot.

I know! That would change this from tragedy to bittersweet drama.

She's like the child we sent off on a grand adventure who excelled beyond our wildest dreams... but can't come home.

Grr. I like NASA's response on Twitter: "Why would we want to be anywhere but Mars?" She set out as an explorer, never expecting to return.
