Squirrel of Discovery

Especially for [livejournal.com profile] weaselmom:

What do you think happens next? What's in there? Is this curious squirrel about to embark on an adventure into places we can only imagine? Is this the transformational moment in Squirreldom?

I love this guy's art, how each piece suggests an entire story, usually something magical. I discovered Chris Buzelli because of the art he painted for Kij Johnson's creepy new story, "Ponies."

If you like this piece, check out his galleries.

I love so many of them! The bird's perspective, the Monkey of Science, the creepy Industry Man... lots more, too! Evocative and surreal.

His style reminds me of some of Paul Flinders work.

Ooh, I love the Octonaut or Astropus:

Hahahaha!

Clearly, that's Ringo from the cafe scene in Pulp Fiction. The acorn may or may not contain Marcellus Walrus' soul.

Duh.

Isn't it lovely? He does such cool, evocative work.

Later, the squirrel and its family confront another troupe of squirrels over a cache of cashews. They fight, and our hero uses an acorn cap as a helmet to protect himself, while beating one of the opponents to death with a piece of shell. Chittering madly, he tosses the shard into the air, where it morphs into a spaceship about to dock with a giant hamster-wheel space station in Earth orbit, to Alvin and the Chipmunks' version of "The Blue Danube Waltz."

I'm... I'm strangely moved.

[identity profile] drpaisley.livejournal.com 2010-11-25 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, Chris, I'm afraid I can't do that.

The best part? My first name is actually David, so you can say, "I'm sorry, Dave..." I just won't realize you're talking to me ;-)

Had I but known.

::blink blink::

Based on the disturbing nature of his other work, I assume something positively Lovecraftian happens next.

Good luck, little buddy!

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2010-11-25 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Naturally you'd see that! :-D

He'll do great things, so maybe more Tolkienian than Lovecraftian, mehopes.
