If you've been listening to the news, you know that meteorologists are barely able to contain themselves over the glory of the storm currently pummeling most of the US. Here's what it looks like from space:

Click the image to see the WIRED story.

Meteorologists predict that the storm will bury snowfall records across the Midwest. In the East, it’s expected to deliver ice storms that could cause $1 billion in damage. It’s the latest in a string of storms fitting a pattern predicted by climate scientists. As the world warms up, the air can hold more moisture, loading storm systems with more water that’s ultimately dumped back onto the Earth.

Yes, global warming = more dramatic winter weather! It's a wild, wild world. And exciting! SNOWPOCALYPSE FOR ALL!

Chris

I just have to say that it's so relieving to know people who understand the science of climate change. If I could tag my comments, I'd use your 'hope for humanity' tag on this one.

Oh, I know what you mean! I haven't checked Facebook today, but I'd bet any amount of buckies that the wingnut global-warming deniers are posting nonsense like, "Here's 'global warming' for you, Al Gore lovers!"

Gah.

No Snowpocalypse here, thanks. I rather enjoyed riding the Speed Triple to the gym today.

Looking at the current weather map I don't see how it can last until 6 AM. My yard seems to have about 4" right now, but I'm in a place that is a bit protected with hills and trees.

That is a spectacular image; thanks for sharing!

Ottawa

Nothing going on here yet. Sun and partial cloud.

..oh... and -25C wind chill tonight.

That's why when I talk about

global climate change, I prefer not to use global warming. A better term would be global weather weirdness.

"good lord" was my original reaction.

Sunny and cold (for Seattle) here.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Sure, rub it in. It's now so cold in Lawrence that filaments of ice are forming on the outside of the windows, trapping little snow-blossoms.

I had to shovel to get the mail.

Which is six feet from the front door.

BASTARD!

Me, I shoveled the snow out from around my parked & bagged Vespa, parked on the front stoop under the eaves, several feet away and eight inches up from the sidewalk. Rather, BURIED IN A GIANT DRIFT, I mean.

Have you ever posted photos of said Trip? I don't recall seeing any and I wanna!

It's gotten much less snowy here, which means it's just sorta dumping on us. *sigh*

Re: Ottawa

Whoah, that's some coldness. It'll be in the teens below zero Fahrenheit here - about the same, I think!

Re: That's why when I talk about

Sure, that's more descriptive! Though it's due to the Earth's climate gaining energy, e.g. heating up.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

"Cold" here means currently 16°F or -4°F with windchill.

Oh, and blowing, drifting snow as it still dumps down....

Okay, so I know that's a picture of a super-impressive mega storm and it's filled with awesome.

But a tiny voice in my head thinks it looks like the US's angry ex-girlfriend has erased his picture from the globe.

Craigslist ad for the Speed Trip

Had a guy offer a trade for a '69 T-bird today, but I'd really rather have cash.

Ooh, that's a sexxxy bike. (See what I did there?) The white looks like a canvas to me....

Doesn't look like it's been down! How much are you asking, again? That's the fourth generation, right? What year? I wants!

From: [identity profile] dotar-sojat.livejournal.com

We have hunkered down in the house, with a fire, and some books, and some wine. And although we didn't lose power, we went ahead and broke out the camping gear and cooked chicken pot pies over the fire. Had this been a real emergancy we would have rocked it!

That's awesome! After I did a bunch of teaching-related work, we gobbled fresh beef stew and watched a movie.

If you do want it I'd be happy to make a deal with you. Enabler? Why, of course not. . .:)

It's an '07 1050cc. It runs great and has about 11k on the clock.

It has, however, been down. The headlamps were damaged and I replaced them with an Acerbis headlight unit. The instrument cluster was busted and so I replaced it with a nice Veypor gauge system. The handlebars were fine but I didn't care for the bend so I replaced them with a Renthal set. The frame's perfect.

There are cosmetic flaws, but the bike itself is in great working order.

Hmm. . . maintenance work is current, but it could use a new chain.

I'm asking $4,600 on Craigslist.

Hee... I think they're probably all on the LJWorld banging out their charming form of ignorance.

It looks like someone smeared frosting on our corner of the globe.
So, I have to sort of wonder about the energy crisis of the early 70s and the crazy snowiness that winters then had as well. Were we just unable to measure worldwide climate as well back then? Without Internet, did we just not hear about what was happening?
Rhetorical questions, really.
