mckitterick: From a US nuclear test in the 1960s. (mushroom cloud)

I can't bring myself to post a photo of my IMMENSELY SWOLLEN LIP, because GROSS. Instead, imagine if you will this scenario and its consequences:

Yesterday, I put a BEE IN MY MOUTH. (Do I need to specify this was an accident?) It didn't like its new environment and plunged its stinger deep into the inside of my bottom lip. The little bastard was really embedded, too, so I had to force it out of my mouth using a finger.

Ever been stung? Now imagine that INSIDE YOUR MOUTH. Feels a bit like someone is punching you in the face and one of your teeth is trying to work its way through your lip. Oh, and the swelling makes eating and drinking interesting.

Two doses of three ibuprofen each with a variety of boozes helped, but this morning I awoke more swollen than ever. I've taken another dose of ibuprofen, but so far, no reduction in swelling. Can't wait to do my 3-hour lecture tonight....

On a positive note, it's nice to know I'm still not allergic to bee stings.

Chris

As a bee- and wasp-phobic person, this post troubled me immensely. Hope you feel better ASAP!

Y'know, I love bees and what they provide. Maybe it was a hornet... yeah, that's it. Little bastard hornet. Wasps, I kinda hate the hell out of them, because CREEPY REPRODUCTION. Can you say "inspiration for the xenomorph in Alien"? They sure can.

You are not helping my phobia. Seriously, I once hid in my office for an hour and a half because there was a wasp in the hallway of my house. I ultimately ended up smashing it by throwing a style guide onto it while it was sitting on the ground. Not my proudest moment.

"I ultimately ended up smashing it by throwing a style guide onto it" - much like Ellen Ripley turned editor, you are my hero.

I'm sorry!

If it makes you feel any better, in 10th grade chemistry a little cute bee came along on landed on my finger and stung me. I went to the nurse, came back, and sat down..... right on Big Ole' Mama Bee, who apparently didn't appreciate my interactions with little baby bee.

Oh jeez, I HATE wasps, and I am not overfond of anything else with carapaces or exoskeletons unless they swim.

When I was about 10 a wasp got caught in my hair and stung my neck repeatedly until my mother cut my hair off. So this is why I wear my hair tied back all summer to this day, and why a whole can of Raid is just enough to kill one of the bstrds.

Be well. Use ice.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Yowza, how horrible! I'm at the office now, and there's not much I can do except tough it out until 7pm tonight....

From: [identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com

Ice will help, but it won't make speaking any easier, I'm afraid....

Hope it gets better soon!

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

I do have some ice in my big mug o' caffeine, and you better bet I'll hold it to my lips (until class, anyway).

I got stung on my palm one summer by a bee that was apparently trying to find some nectar among the bright colors on the bottle label. Yours sounds much worse.

If you're even a little bit allergic, a Benadryl might help with the swelling.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Lovely. Yeah, I used some Benedryl last night before bed, and am still a bit drowsy from it. Will use some again tonight!

From: [identity profile] tully01.livejournal.com

Yeah, I probably should've mentioned that benadryl will make you drowsy, just in case you weren't aware. But I figured you were. :)

Only this last year I started showing signs that I am now somewhat allergic to mosquito bites, something that never bothered me before. And I hates it.

Man, two Benedryl whacked me for 10 hours of sleep last night o_0

Seems I am allergic to bee-stings: The lip is as bad as yesterday, which was worse than the day I got the sting. Hmph.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Wait, you're allergic to mosquitoes? How does that go? We have a few around here, and they like to bite....

From: [identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com

I am alergic to mosquitoes too. Sorry for your sting, at festival there is an award for performers who are stung that way, it is called the Buzzy Navel. I do not want this award.

the "Buzzy Navel"

Hooray! I get a prize!

Not one I recommend seeking, though....

I'm allergic to FLEAS. So I got to have docs ask in August what those red marks were.... grrrrr.

They went away quickly enough, though the dudes at PetSmart tried to talk Roh out of buying the one-spot flea stuff. She called, said they recommended spraying/flea powder and i went, 'uh, no."

More sympathies from here. Even as someone who's been known to apologize to wasps as they lay into whichever body part I've inadvertently squished them with.

From: [identity profile] queenmomcat.livejournal.com

Somehow I imagined not. I'm not always that polite, mind.

From: [identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com

Most unfortunate. Very glad to hear that you are not allergic.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Me too! Though it seems I am a little allergic to bee-stings, because the lip is as bad as yesterday, which was worse than the day I got stung.

From: [identity profile] bogwitch64.livejournal.com

Did you try benadryl for the swelling? Hope it's much better by now.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Took two last night, which caused me to sleep 10 HOURS. The swelling has not gone down; in fact, last night it got so bad that it split my lip when brushing my teeth :-(

bees and wasps

Many great sympathies, from one who's been stung by both. But I beg you to correct the OP--it was NOT A BEE!! Bees don't get in people's drinks. They are kind, lovable ladies who never mean us harm.

Wasps, OTOH, aka yellowjackets, are mean, and love sweet drinks or anything that makes them think of this. And their stings HURT!

So please, don't let anyone think the poor bees, whose world is being destroyed due to Colony Collapse Disorder, are harming you. It's important to make sure people don't fear them.

Yellowjackets, or hornets either for that matter, well--get out the Hornet Wasp Jet Bomb II!

Re: bees and wasps

I just did some research, and it seems the little monster was a yellow jacket, not a bee. I, too, worry about losing our bees, and I've always been nice to them. So it's good to know I can hate on my assailant.

Ouch, I'm very sorry to hear this. I sympathize because I once got stung by three bees. I was trying to walk away, going "Ladies, ladies, I don't want any trouble here--" but they stung me anyway. On the head. So the next day my face swelled up like a pumpkin, and I could only see out of one eye. But I had to go to work anyway, and horrify the whole office. I don't resent it as much when bees do it, because they die after they sting you, so they're sacrificing themselves for the good of the hive, however mistakenly. But wasps can sting you an indefinite number of times, just for the hell of it. When I see them trying to nest around my house, I explain to them that while I admire them as complex organisms of great beauty, I will not tolerate them in my space. If they don't leave, then I move on from compassion for all living things to KILL IT WITH FIRE RARRR.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Hahaha! That's pretty much how I feel about wasps, too, and I've always liked bees, so I'm going to pretend that it wasn't a bee at all but some kind of hideous hornet or something.

I just looked up "yellow jacket," and it appears that's what it was. Yellow jackets are WASPS. Thus BASTARDS. They do not pollinate plants. Everyone out at the RenFaire was calling them "sweat bees," but they certainly are not. I shall modify this post with this new information.

I should point out that, as a teen camping in northern Minnesota, I was once stung about 200 times by an entire hive. That night, I enjoyed a great deal of hallucination and could not sleep. That was something else.

From: [identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com

good lord! I don't have a huge reaction to bee stings, but IN MY MOUTH??? OH OW.
:(

i wanna see the pictures, though. Halloween is coming, you can pretend it's a costume.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

I don't recommend it.

Might just take a photo today. Especially if my lip splits open again....

From: [identity profile] silverfae.livejournal.com

EUWWW oWWW This makes me hurt for you.
I hope it gets better soon.
Anyone have a teabag? It can draw out any residual venom.

Damn that's horrible.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

Hm, that's an interesting idea. You'd think that because it's inside my mouth, the venom would have leached out already....
