I turned on CNN while having lunch, and got pulled into the sentencing phase for that Smith guy who kidnapped, raped, and killed 11-year-old Carlie Bruscia a couple of years ago. The judge went through every single aggravating and mitigating circumstance surrounding the crimes, in great detail, for an hour and a half. Jesus. I'm emotionally wracked right now, feel like I've just run a marathon or something. (The perp got the death penalty, as "each aggravating circumstance is more than enough to outweigh all the mitigating circumstances.") The camera showed the girl's dad at the end, just sitting in the audience as everyone was filing out. If I felt like this, there's no way anyone can even imagine how he must feel.

God, sometimes it's hard to be part of the human species. It's times like this that I swing from loving our species to understanding why the other denizens of the universe have stayed away, why they would want to keep us isolated on our little world.
