I have been a little worried about [livejournal.com profile] tatsuko_shikibu's weight for years now: She averages between 6 and 7 pounds - just a tiny thing! And keeping food inside of her is a challenge, too, so she only eats soft food (she nibbles a little crunchy stuff, but only as an appetizer, I guess). She's been eating less lately, so I thought I'd try something new: Fancy Feast soft food. It's pretty much human food by the looks of things. Last night, shredded chicken in broth; this morning, turkey nibbles in gravy.

Wow, but does she love this stuff! She just about finished the chicken in one meal last night, and it was all gone by this morning. But the turkey - whoah, it's already gone! Tonight's menu: chicken hearts & liver in gravy!

I expect that, very soon, she'll exceed 7 pounds for the first time in a decade ;-)

Now, off to ship some things at UPS (one's for you, [livejournal.com profile] edichka2!).

Yay for Fancy Feast!

My cats get it only in treats capacity, but then they have no trouble eating. they are like two furry zeppelins.

Cool. I can't imagine her fat, but maybe a little plump is good.

I'll drop her back to less-savory cat food if she gets chubby.

Love that silly icon!

She would probably wolf down Gerber's or Beechnut baby food, too. That is what animal hospitals feed their inmates.

Aw, poor skinny little Tatsuko (née Tortilla). I'm glad you hit on something she likes.

I'm not sure about a long-term diet of baby food, by the way: animal hospitals use it because it's easy on the digestive system and highly palatable (for enticing sick animals to feed), but it may lack essential amino acids that cats (but not necessarily babies) need, notably taurine.

Ah, true; thanks for the tip about baby food. Maybe only as a treat once in a while to keep variety in her foods.

And, considering her original name, perhaps she'd like Mexican food; maybe a bit of chorizo.

I'm glad to hear this for your sweet little furry pal! We have the same problem with our wonderful Miss Ruby Louise who just won't eat much, and has always been skin, fur, and bones. I'll try some Fancy Feast for her.

Our trouble is that our other beloved kitty Vincent is overweight and our vet has instructed us to feed him low calorie food. But he tends to feel slighted and react by harassing Ruby when he notices she's getting a tastier and more caloric dinner plate than he is.

It's okay. She'll show him when she eventually gets elected to the school board. May we count you as one of her supporters? She's pro-science and evolution and sex education positive!

Heee! I'd vote for her. Will you "assist" her in debates and writing? Cats aren't so good at that.

From: [identity profile] secret-malady.livejournal.com

Yeah, I figure I'll stay on as her "assistant" to develop the campaign print materials, but it's quickly become clear that her well-placed purrs, hisses, meows are already articulate beyond the average politician!

If it's an appetite problem, the vet can provide a can of gooshy goodness that stimulates the kitty appetite. The old FurBeast dived nose first into it when I had just about given up on her ever eating again.

From: [identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com

No, she asks for food at least twice a day, but doesn't eat much at one time. I found the best way to get her eating if she turns up her nose at something is good old Laxatone or its equivalents!

I am a firm believer in older cats being given whatever thing they will eat, when their appetite goes.
